Digital marketing services are the ways an agency gets your business found and chosen online: search engine optimisation, paid advertising, social media, content, email, a website that converts, and the analytics that show what worked. This guide explains what each service includes, how agencies charge in Ethiopia, how long results take, and what to check before you hire.
What marketing and digital marketing mean
Marketing is everything a business does to make the right people aware of it, interested in it and willing to buy. That includes pricing, the product itself, packaging, adverts, events and word of mouth.
Digital marketing is the part of marketing done through online channels: search engines, social media, websites, email and messaging apps. Its advantage over billboards or radio is that you can see who responded and what it cost. Its limit is that it only reaches people who are online.
A marketing agency plans and runs marketing for clients across any channel. A digital marketing agency does the same work online only. If you are not sure which type of provider you need, our comparison of a web agency, a digital agency and a marketing agency sets out the differences.
What a digital marketing agency does
Agencies package the work differently, but the services below cover almost everything a business buys. You rarely need all of them at once.
Search engine optimisation (SEO)
SEO makes your business appear when people search on Google for what you sell. It includes technical fixes to your website, pages written around what customers search for, a complete Google Business Profile for local searches, and links from other sites. SEO is also increasingly about being quoted by AI answer engines, which we cover in our SEO, AEO and GEO service. It suits businesses with a lasting need to be found, and results build over months rather than days. See local SEO in Addis Ababa and what SEO costs in Ethiopia.
Paid advertising
Paid advertising puts your offer in front of a chosen audience on Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn or YouTube, and you pay for the attention. It is the fastest route to enquiries and the easiest to switch off. It needs a working website or a Telegram channel to send people to, and a way to pay the platforms, which is a real obstacle in Ethiopia. Start with paid media and Facebook Ads vs Google Ads in Ethiopia.
Social media marketing
Social media marketing covers the posts, video, adverts and replies on the platforms your customers use. It builds familiarity and trust, and handles questions in public. Our full guide is social media marketing in Ethiopia.
Content marketing
Articles, guides, videos and case studies that answer buyers' questions. Content feeds SEO, gives your sales conversations something to point to, and shows what you know. It works slowly and compounds.
Email and messaging
Email works well for business-to-business selling, repeat customers and audiences abroad. For many Ethiopian consumers, messaging comes first, which is why our Telegram approach uses channels and bots. Choose the channel by how your customers actually behave.
Website development and conversion
Every other service ends at your website, so a slow or confusing site wastes the money spent on the rest. The work covers design, speed, mobile layout, forms, local payment options and tracking. Our web development service and the guides on fast websites in Ethiopia and website cost go into detail.
Brand and design
Logo, colours, tone of voice and the look of your posts and adverts. Consistent branding makes a small budget look larger and helps people remember you. See branding and design for Ethiopian businesses.
Analytics and reporting
Setting up tracking so you know which channel produced which enquiry, and reporting on it in plain language every month. Without this, you cannot tell a working campaign from an expensive one. It is the service most often skipped and the one that makes the others accountable. See analytics.
How the services fit together
Think of them as a path a customer walks.
- Get found: SEO, social media, paid advertising and content bring people in.
- Convince and convert: the website, Telegram channel, phone number and payment options turn interest into an enquiry or an order.
- Keep and grow: email, messaging and good service bring them back.
- Measure: analytics shows which step is leaking.
For a small business, a sensible order is to fix the foundation first (a fast website and a complete Google Business Profile), then add one channel that finds customers, and only then add another. Buying five services at once spreads a small budget too thin to learn from any of them.
Digital marketing in Ethiopia: what changes
Most guides are written for markets where nearly everyone is online and pays with a card. Ethiopia differs in ways that change the plan.
- The online audience is smaller than the population. DataReportal's Digital 2026: Ethiopia report counts 29.5 million internet users, 21.7% of the population, against 93.2 million mobile connections. Digital marketing reaches a large, growing group, not everyone.
- Facebook is the largest paid social audience. Its ad audience is 9.80 million, against 1.55 million for Instagram and 1.80 million LinkedIn members in the same report.
- Messaging often comes before email. Telegram channels and direct messages carry a lot of buying conversation.
- Language matters. Amharic content and search reach people English-only content misses. See Amharic SEO strategy.
- Paying is harder. Foreign currency limits complicate paying Meta and Google, and online checkout depends on local options such as Telebirr and Chapa.
- Data is expensive. Heavy pages and long video lose people on mobile data, so lighter is better.
What digital marketing costs in Ethiopia
There are two separate costs, and quotes often blur them.
- Ad spend is money paid to Google, Meta or another platform to show your adverts. It goes to the platform, not the agency.
- Service fees are what you pay the agency or freelancer for the work.
How agencies charge
| Model | How it works | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A fixed monthly fee for an agreed scope of work. | Ongoing work such as SEO, social media and reporting. | A vague scope. Ask exactly what is delivered each month. |
| Project fee | A fixed price for a defined job. | A website build, a rebrand or a one-off campaign. | Extra charges for changes. Agree what counts as in scope. |
| Percentage of ad spend | The agency takes a share of the money spent on adverts. | Managing paid campaigns. | An incentive to raise your budget. Agree the spend on your goals. |
| Day or hourly rate | You pay for time used. | Consulting, audits and training. | Open-ended totals. Ask for a cap. |
Figures we can stand behind
For paid advertising, our own guidance is a minimum of 10,000 ETB a month in ad spend paid to the platforms, so the campaign produces enough data to learn from. Agency management fees for paid campaigns are often 15 to 25 percent of ad spend or a flat monthly retainer. Both come from our Facebook and Google comparison. For SEO and websites, the prices depend on scope, and we publish what we can in the cost of SEO in Ethiopia and website development cost.
What moves the price
- The number of channels you ask the agency to run.
- How much content is produced, especially filmed video.
- How many comments and messages need replies, and how quickly.
- The size of your ad budget.
- How detailed the reporting is.
- How fast you want results.
Comparing quotes fairly
- Ask what is delivered each month, item by item.
- Ask whether ad spend is included or extra.
- Ask who owns the ad accounts, analytics and website. It should be you.
- Ask what the report contains and when you receive it.
- Ask about the minimum contract term and how to leave.
At Rylo Agency, a quote starts with a free 30-minute audit of your site, search presence and ad spend, so the price reflects your situation. You keep the findings either way.
How long results take
| Channel | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Paid advertising | Enquiries can start within the first weeks, and you can see quickly whether the offer works. Improving the cost per enquiry takes longer. |
| SEO | Usually three to six months before results compound. Anyone promising a number one ranking in a fortnight is guessing or lying. |
| Social media | A few months of steady posting and replying before the pattern is clear. |
| Website build | A marketing site is typically four to eight weeks. Custom software depends on scope. |
In-house, freelancer or agency
| Option | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| In-house hire | Knows the business and is always available. | One person rarely covers strategy, design, video, ads and analytics. |
| Freelancer | Lower cost and flexible for one skill. | You coordinate several freelancers yourself and nobody owns the whole result. |
| Agency | A team across skills with one point of accountability. | Costs more, and quality depends on who actually does the work. |
How to choose an agency
Every agency in Addis Ababa calls itself the best, so ask for evidence instead. Check for real reporting from a real client, local knowledge beyond an office address, clear ownership of your accounts and data, and honest timelines. Our guide to choosing a digital marketing agency in Ethiopia sets out five checks.
Warning signs:
- A guaranteed number one ranking or a guaranteed sales figure.
- No written scope, or a scope described only as "digital solutions".
- Ad, analytics or website accounts registered in the agency's name.
- No report, or a report of views and likes but no enquiries.
- Being vague about who actually does the work.
A sensible first 90 days
- Month one: foundation. Audit what you have, set one goal, install tracking, and fix the basics of your website and Google Business Profile.
- Month two: launch one channel. Choose the one closest to your buyers, such as paid ads, local SEO or Facebook and Telegram, and run it properly.
- Month three: review and decide. Look at enquiries and cost per enquiry, keep what works, and decide whether to add a second channel.
Frequently asked questions
Digital marketing services usually include search engine optimisation, paid advertising, social media management, content marketing, email and messaging, website development, brand design and analytics. Most businesses do not need all of them at once. Start with a fast website and one channel that reaches your buyers, then add services as the results justify the cost.
Costs have two parts: ad spend paid to platforms and fees paid to the agency. Our guidance for paid advertising is at least 10,000 ETB a month in ad spend, with management fees often 15 to 25 percent of spend or a flat retainer. SEO and website prices depend on scope, so ask for an itemised quote.
A marketing agency plans and runs marketing across every channel, including television, radio, print and outdoor as well as online. A digital marketing agency works online only, through search, social media, advertising, email and websites. Many firms do both, so ask for a list of what they will actually deliver rather than relying on the name.
Paid advertising can bring enquiries within the first weeks. SEO usually takes three to six months before results compound, and social media needs a few months of steady work. A marketing website typically takes four to eight weeks to build. Be cautious of anyone who promises a number one ranking within days.
You need somewhere to send people, but it does not have to be a large site. A fast, clear website with your phone number and a way to enquire is the usual base. For some Ethiopian businesses a well-run Telegram channel or Google Business Profile works first, with a full website to follow.
