Most businesses in Ethiopia compete for the same English keywords, while customers who search in Amharic often find thin, machine-translated pages or nothing relevant at all. That gap is an opportunity. This guide explains how Amharic SEO works: how to find the searches, how to write for them, and how to set up a bilingual site so Google shows the right language to the right person.

Why are Amharic searches under-served?
Amharic searches are under-served because most SEO in Ethiopia targets English only. Businesses fight over terms like these:
- "Real estate in Addis Ababa" (high competition, high cost per click)
- "Best web developer Ethiopia" (high competition)
Call it the "ferenji" bias. Now type "የቤት ሽያጭ" (house sale) or "ዘመናዊ የውበት ሳሎን" (modern beauty salon) and look at what comes back: often little that is useful, or automatic translations that make no sense. Customers who trust brands that speak their mother tongue correctly are left without a good answer, and the business that writes one has far fewer competitors to beat.
How do you do keyword research in Amharic?
Start with the fact that people search for the same thing in two ways:
- Ge'ez script: "የቤት ሽያጭ", typed on an Amharic keyboard.
- Latin transliteration: Amharic words in English letters, such as "gebeya" or "tiru", often typed on a phone without an Amharic keyboard.
Collect both forms. Three free sources help:
- Google autocomplete: start typing the Amharic term and note what Google suggests.
- Search Console: if your site already has any Amharic content, the Performance report shows the Amharic queries that reached you.
- Your customers: the words they use in Telegram messages, comments and phone calls are the words they search with.
Keyword tools often report little or no volume for Amharic terms. That usually means the tools don't measure them well, not that nobody searches, so judge by relevance and real customer language.
Should you translate pages or write them in Amharic?
Write them natively. We don't use Google Translate, because machine translation misses the intent behind a search, produces phrasing no Ethiopian would use, and signals low quality to readers. A native writer who understands both the language and the business will choose the words people actually search with, and the page will read as if it was written for them, because it was.
How do you optimise an Amharic page?
- Title and meta description in Amharic script, with the main search term near the start.
- Headings in Amharic that match the questions people ask.
- The
langattribute: setlang="am"on the page so browsers and search engines know the language. - Schema markup with Amharic names and descriptions where relevant.
- Clean URLs: keep them short and readable; many sites use a
/am/folder for the Amharic version.
How do you set up a bilingual English and Amharic site?
Give each language its own URL, for example /services in English and /am/services in Amharic, and connect them with hreflang tags. Each page lists itself and its translation (en and am), plus an x-default version for everyone else. That tells Google which version to show to which searcher, and stops the two versions competing. This is how rylo.agency is set up: our homepage, services and contact pages each exist in English and Amharic, linked with hreflang.
Add a visible language switch on every page, so a visitor who lands in the wrong language can change it in one tap.
Does Amharic help local SEO?
Yes. Your Google Business Profile can carry an Amharic description, and reviews written in Amharic help you show up for Amharic searches. Use your business name exactly as it appears on your signage, in both scripts if you use both. Our local SEO guide for Addis Ababa covers the profile in detail.
How do you measure Amharic SEO?
In Search Console, filter the Performance report by queries containing Amharic characters, or by the pages in your /am/ folder. Track impressions, clicks and average position for those queries month by month, alongside the enquiries that arrive in Amharic. SEO usually takes three to six months to compound, and Amharic is no exception.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Google indexes and ranks pages written in Amharic, and shows them to people who search in Amharic script or in Amharic words typed with Latin letters. Pages rank best when they are written natively rather than machine-translated, set lang="am", use Amharic titles and headings, and are linked to their English versions with hreflang tags.
Write it natively in Amharic, with a writer who understands both the language and your business. Machine translation misses the words people actually search with and produces phrasing customers notice immediately. You can keep the same structure as your English pages, but the wording, examples and keywords should come from how your Amharic-speaking customers talk.
Collect the terms in both Ge'ez script and Latin transliteration. Use Google autocomplete as you type Amharic phrases, check the Search Console Performance report for Amharic queries already reaching your site, and note the words customers use in messages and calls. Keyword tools often under-report Amharic volume, so judge terms by relevance rather than reported numbers.
