Many businesses in Addis Ababa do digital marketing without a strategy: a Facebook page, some boosted posts, a website nobody updates. Each piece costs money, and none of them is pointed at the same goal. A strategy fixes that by deciding, in advance, who you are trying to reach, where, with what message, and how you will know it worked. This guide walks through building one in seven steps.

What is a digital marketing strategy?
A digital marketing strategy is the plan that ties your online channels to one business goal. It answers five questions: who are we selling to, where do they spend time online, what will we say to them, where will we send them, and how will we measure the result. Integrated marketing means the social media, search, ads, content and brand messaging all tell the same story and lead to the same next step, rather than running as separate projects.
Step 1: Set one business goal and a number to track
Start with one goal for the next quarter, stated as something you can count: enquiries, orders, bookings, shop visits, or Telegram subscribers. "Grow our brand" is not a goal you can measure. "Thirty enquiries a month from the website" is.
Then choose the numbers that show progress toward it. Cost per lead, website conversions and return on ad spend tell you far more than likes or followers. Write the goal and the number down, because every later decision is checked against them.
Step 2: Know who you are selling to
Describe your buyer in plain terms: their age, where they live, what they ask before they buy, what worries them, and whether they message you in Amharic or English. Most Ethiopian businesses have two quite different buyers:
- Local customers, mostly on phones, often in Addis Ababa, who want to message or call before paying.
- The diaspora, who buy property, travel, gifts and services for family at home, and who expect a professional website and clear payment terms. Our guide to marketing to the Ethiopian diaspora covers that audience.
Ask your last ten customers how they found you. Their answers are the most reliable research you have.
Step 3: Pick your channels
Choose two or three channels where your buyers already are, and run them properly before adding more.
- Google search and Maps: catches people at the moment they search for what you sell. Paid search ads work immediately; SEO builds over months.
- Facebook and Instagram: Meta ads target people by age, interests and location across Ethiopia, with images and video. Facebook has the largest ad audience in the country.
- TikTok: short video for a young audience.
- Telegram: channels and bots for announcing offers and taking orders, which suits buyers who prefer messages to forms. Our Telegram marketing guide explains the funnel.

Step 4: Make sure your website and landing pages convert
Every channel ends somewhere, usually your website. A slow or confusing page wastes the money spent getting people there. Each campaign should land on a page that matches the offer, loads quickly on mobile data, and makes the next step obvious: a call button, a WhatsApp or Telegram link, or a short form. Our guide to building fast websites in Ethiopia covers the speed side.
Step 5: Plan content in English and Amharic
Content is what you publish to answer buyers' questions: posts, short videos, articles, case studies and how-to guides. Pick three or four themes, such as the product in use, behind the scenes, customer stories, answers to common questions and offers, and plan a month at a time around your offers and the holiday calendar.
Write in the language your customers use. Amharic content reaches people English-only content misses, on social media and in search; our guide to Amharic SEO covers the search side. A distinct brand helps too: consistent colours, tone and design make a small budget look larger, and our branding and design guide covers the basics.
Step 6: Set a budget split and a first-90-days roadmap
Decide how much goes to ad spend, paid to the platforms, and how much to the work itself: content, management and reporting. Paid ads bring short-term enquiries; organic SEO and social build results that last. Most strategies combine both. Our guide to what digital marketing costs in Ethiopia sets out how agencies charge and what to budget.
- Month one: foundation. Set the goal, install tracking, fix the website basics and complete your Google Business Profile.
- Month two: launch. Start your chosen channels and run small tests of different messages and formats.
- Month three: review. Keep what produced enquiries, cut what didn't, and decide whether to add a channel.

Step 7: Measure and adjust every month
Once a month, compare the numbers against the goal you set in step one. Which channel produced enquiries, and at what cost? Which posts and ads led to messages rather than just likes? Move budget toward what worked and stop what didn't. A strategy is not a document you write once: it is a monthly habit of checking and adjusting.
The market moves too. Digital marketing trends in East Africa covers the shifts worth planning for this year.

Frequently asked questions
A digital marketing strategy is a written plan that ties your online channels to one business goal. It sets out who you are selling to, which two or three channels you will use, what you will say, where you will send people, how much you will spend and how you will measure the result each month.
Start with two or three channels where your buyers already spend time, such as Google search, Facebook or Telegram, and run them properly for at least a quarter. Adding more channels before the first ones work spreads a small budget too thin to learn anything, and slow replies on extra accounts cost sales.
Review the numbers every month and the strategy itself every quarter. The monthly check compares enquiries, cost per lead and sales against your goal and moves budget toward what worked. The quarterly review asks whether the goal, the buyer description and the channel choice still fit the business.
